Mayan culture

The ancient Maya were a complex and fascinating culture, and their spirituality was an integral part of their way of life. One of the most important deities in the Maya religion was Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, medicine, and childbirth. Ixchel was often depicted as a woman with a jaguar head, and she was believed to be the wife of the sun god, Kinich Ahau. Offers to Ixchel were thought to bring health and fertility, and her priests were highly respected within Maya society. Today, the spirit of Ixchel lives on in the form of the Imox, a small figurine that is used in Maya spiritual ceremonies. The Imox is often adorned with flowers and feathers, and it is thought to represent the way that humanity is connected to the natural world. By honoring Ixchel through the Imox, modern Maya people keep alive the tradition of their ancestors and continue to seek her blessings.

 AURA MAYA Bags

Imox is the Mayan water spirit and the name given to this amazing handcrafted tote bag from Guatemala's Mayan cultures. This unique artwork is handmade from a Guatemalan fabric known as 'jaspe' and is brought to you from the shores of Lake Atitlan. We named it that way because the waves on the "jaspe" fabric remind us of water of the lake Atitlan. Our weavers arrange and bind the 100% natural cotton threads into their creations. These threads are then naturally dyed, loosened, and realigned before being woven by artisans on the same type of backstrap loom used by Mayan weavers in ancient times. The weavings remind us of the movement of water and waves, so we proudly named our tote bag IMOX
